Interrupting the School to Prison Pipeline
From the United Methodist Women website: The crisis of incarceration this nation now faces demands people of faith act with swift and fierce moral authority to transform, not just reform, an irreparably broken system. It demands that all of us—clergy, seminarians, teachers, and people in pews, mosques and temples— provoke a revolution of values that strikes at the heart of mass incarceration. Without exception, we believers are required to realize a just world. This is our call, and we are falling short when it comes to how we treat those in jails, prisons and detention centers. Voter Rights / Redistricting Reform
From the United Methodist Women website: Fifty years ago saw the historic passing of the Voting Rights Act. But today, this hard-fought right to vote is in peril. The Voting Rights Act allows the federal government to enforce every citizen’s right to vote. But recent court rulings and laws have weakened the act, and in the last five years, 21 states have passed laws that make it more difficult to vote. These laws largely affect low-income, African-American and Hispanic voters. The Voting Rights Act, meant to end racial discrimination in the voting process, is slowly eroding. We have much to do speaking truth to power in the days ahead. Come increase your awareness and develop advocacy skills with United Methodist Women sisters from across the conference.
